Coaching

SASCA has a number of experienced players who can provide coaching to young players – whether they are beginners or already competing in international competitions!

Children can benefit from individual coaching, analysis of games and group coaching sessions at SASCA.

Some of our coaches are:

John Fryer

is one of the most experienced chess coaches in the Sheffield area, having organised SASCA club nights for over 30 years. He currently teaches chess at lunchtime sessions at schools such as Mylnhurst, Ecclesall and Totley. Under John’s coaching, Ecclesall have twice qualified for the national finals of the English Primary Schools Chess Association competition.

Paul Blackman

is a highly experienced player and former Yorkshire lightning champion. Paul is an expert on teaching endgames and widely regarded as one of the most difficult opponents in the local area. He captains the highly-successful Sheffield D team in the Yorkshire league, which has provided experience to up-and-coming junior players in recent seasons.

Jonathan Arnott

is an ECF Accredited Coach and a Candidate Master (awarded by FIDE, the world chess federation).  He is a former England Under-21 international who captained the Yorkshire side for three seasons. He plays for the White Rose team in the 4NCL (Four Nations Chess League).  Jonathan took 2.5 out of 5 playing for White Rose (one of only two British teams) at the European Club Cup in 2010.

He regularly competes in the international Gibraltar Masters competition, in which some of the top players in the world have competed.  Jonathan will be competing in the 2011 British Chess Championships.

Steve Gibbs

is a local accountant and runs the finances for SASCA. He plays for the SASCA first team in the evening league, and has given entertaining talks on games played by some of the best players in chess history.
