ABOUT US

SASCA is the Sheffield Schools’ Chess Association. The organisation exists to promote junior chess in Sheffield and the surrounding area. We do this by holding regular club nights, entering teams in the adult evening leagues, entering the British Land UK Chess challenge, organising the Sheffield Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 competitions and encouraging children to enter other competitions. Some of our coaches also run regular chess clubs in Sheffield schools.

The venue

SASCA meets at Handsworth Christian School, 231 Handsworth Road, Handsworth, Sheffield, S13 9BJ.

Club night

SASCA meets (almost) every Monday during school term time. The club night starts at 7.30pm, and runs until 9.30pm. If there is a match, the club is often extended to 10pm or even 10.30pm.

You can leave at any time – some of our younger children only come for the first hour or so.

Opportunities for young players

In-house, SASCA runs a ‘ladder’ system which operates on all club nights. This provides a bit of friendly competition, as well as making sure that children are usually playing against opponents of a similar standard to themselves.

The club runs end-of-term ‘fun’ handicap competitions to give everyone a chance of winning, and children sometimes have the opportunity to take part in a ‘simultaneous display’ where a strong player plays up to 20 games at the same time!

Each year, SASCA organises the Sheffield Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 competitions. Once children have reached a good standard of play, they will be selected for one of the three SASCA teams competing in the local adult evening league.

Children are invited to attend other regional and national competitions, and successful players may receive an invitation to represent Yorkshire for their age group.

Each year, SASCA enters the ‘British Land UK Chess Challenge’. This is a competition which allows children to qualify for regional and national finals – and has over 70,000 entrants nationally. In 2009 one of the SASCA juniors won the competition for her age group, and qualified for the ultimate ‘Terafinal’, finishing 8th across any age group nationally.
